Hello  StacheStrong  Fam!

Tomorrow is National Glioblastoma Awareness Day and we thought it was the perfect timing to update you on all that has happened with StacheStrong in the first half of 2022! If you only have a brief moment, make sure to register for the upcoming 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk!!!

…otherwise please read on to catch up on all things StacheStrong!

You all continue to amaze our family with your generosity and support; it’s amazing to see the continual growth of our organization as we aim to flip the script on this disease! We have now raised over $2,000,000 and funded 21 research grants to date – – –  I say it time and time again, but I remember when we raised our first $10,000 and the excitement that I shared with my brother for what we were doing. We have become a leading organization in this space, which is only possible because of YOUR support.

Research  Funded
We’ll update you on all the awesome events and happenings below, but what matters most is where this money is going and the good that it is doing in advancing brain cancer research. We funded 4 grants already this year in the following highly rated and promising areas:

1) Glioma Connectome Project (GCP): We have added a 7th institution (University of Texas – Houston)  to this study, which was first reported by Yahoo News. We also just announced the first patients have been enrolled in this innovative study! This project aims to utilize information about how the brain is organized (connectomics) and how it relates to the patient’s experience (neuropsych tests, documented deficits, etc.) from before AND after glioma surgery. Machine learning techniques aid in the study about how the brain lives with a tumor and reorganizes during treatment, as well as recurrence, to increase fundamental understanding of the brain and how to provide better care for brain tumor patients.

2) UCLA: novel anti-angiogenic combination therapy for glioblastoma study (Issac Yang, MD and Madhuri Wadehra, PhD)

3) Weill Cornell: Targeting cancer-associated FAP+ cells in irradiated pediatric brain tumors (Claire Vanpouille-Box, PhD)

4) Brigham and Women’s Hospital: Assessing tumor-associated macrophage plasticity regulation by HNRNPH1 to augment adaptive antitumor responses to glioblastoma (Genaro R. Villa, MD, PhD)

These are tangible results to remind you why every dollar matters. It’s why your support is crucial. We can’t promise what tomorrow holds, but we can promise that StacheStrong will continue to push the envelope and fund cutting edge research in the hope of a world without brain cancer.
5th  Annual  5K  Run/Walk
We are excited to host the 5th Annual StacheStrong 5K Run/Walk as a VIRTUAL AND IN PERSON (Vestal, NY) race during the weekend of September 17, 2022. All participants will receive our classic black athletic performance material shirt. Last year’s event had 1,500+ participants in all 50 states and we’re hoping to further grow these totals to make an even bigger impact on brain cancer research!

You can complete the virtual run in your respective city and state at ANY TIME during that weekend and we will also hold the in person race in our hometown of Vestal, NY at the Vestal High School at 3:00pm on Saturday, September 17th. This is of extra significance for our family as it will be the event’s 5th anniversary (#Forever5) and 3 years to the date since Geej gained his wings.

#BrewStacheStrong
The #BrewStacheStrong collaboration is bringing together breweries and communities across the country in support of a disease that impacts far too many people. Just like every ‘Stache tells a story, every beer tells a story. We #BrewStacheStrong to promote and benefit brain cancer research with breweries across the country.

We ended up partnering with 252 breweries in 40 states, which accounted for over 300,000 pints being brewed. Having this many breweries participate is humbling and beyond promising. We’ve already started our outreach for 2023’s #BrewStacheStrong campaign so if you have a contact or friend in the beer/beverage/restaurant industry, please connect us via email. This campaign has the ability to make a profound impact for years to come!
Our NYC fundraiser was the first ever event that launched StacheStrong in 2018. Our dedicated committee invites you to save the date for October 21st from 7:00 – 11:00 pm. We will be returning to Legends on W 33rd street (5 minute walk from Penn Station). If you, your company or someone you know would like to sponsor the NYC event or donate any items/experiences to raise additional funds, please let us know.

REGISTER TODAY!!!
We have been accepted as a Bronze Sponsor and have been allocated 25 bibs for this year’s race, which will be held on Sunday, November 6th. We have filled our entire team and they have already raised $50,000+. If interested in applying for next year’s marathon, please email us at StacheStrong@gmail.com to be considered!
May is a powerful month in our community as it’s national Brain Tumor Awareness Month, which means we are able to put this dire disease at the forefront. Every day throughout the month of May, we highlighted a different person and family that have been impacted by GBM. This disease affects 13,000 people annually and we feel humbled and blessed to be able to provide a platform for those who have gone through it. We invite you to visit our social media channels and read stories from across the country. If you’ve ever watched a loved one go through this diagnosis, every day is ‘brain tumor awareness day’, but for those that haven’t, this is a raw and emotional look into the disease that ultimately claims 10,000 lives every year. Our social media channels were able to reach over 125,000 different people throughout #BTAM – thank you to all those who shared their story throughout the month.
Olympic  Games – Beijing  2022
This past February was one to remember when Matt Hamilton and the U.S. Men’s Curling team took the world by storm. Matt has become a major advocate for StacheStrong and his electric style, mustache and long locks became a viral sensation. He used his platform to raise over $10,000 for StacheStrong by committing to cut his hair at the conclusion of the Winter Games. Seeing the StacheStrong hat on every major media page as well as having people learn about our mission during their biggest moment was beyond special. Cheers to Matt and #TeamShuster – can’t wait to see the squad back in 2026!!! (Olympics.com coverage)

While StacheStrong’s mission is still to raise funds and awareness for brain cancer research, we know the importance of celebrating life. Research allowed GJ to live 25 months after his diagnosis, doubling the statistics for his longevity.  During that time, we were fortunate enough to have countless days enjoying life during his fight. NONE of this would have been possible without his zest for life and positivity. We were fortunate enough to have a strong family unit that made it a priority to enjoy every waking second together. During the 25 months he battled GBM, we were able to experience more together than most do in a lifetime.

We came up with the #LiveLikeGJ Initiative while in hospice care during the last days of Geej’s life. This initiative will honor his legacy by providing a game day experience and giving the gift of “GJ smiles” to a family going through GBM treatments. This year we were able to send Kelly and her family to the Mets game, who represent EVERYTHING StacheStrong stands for. Togetherness, grit, unwavering support for one another and ear to ear smiles. We’re truly blessed to continue to meet amazing individuals like Kelly and proud to provide an evening at the ballpark last week!!!

A MAJOR thank you and appreciation to the Mets organization for making this day truly memorable. They gave their family everything and more than we envisioned when we started to plan this initiative. Excited to partner with this organization to help families #LiveLikeGJ!

Iron Man Jersey Auction and First Pitch
Special thanks to the whole Syracuse Mets team for making this happen. The only way to defeat brain cancer is by working together and building a community so we’re beyond appreciative of all the team does!!! My brother was a die hard Mets fan and I think he’d be pretty proud of this partnership.

It’s fitting that the jerseys the team wore that are currently being auctioned off and available for you to bid on are Iron Man because that’s exactly who my brother was throughout his 25 month battle with glioblastoma. A true super hero. Make sure to bid on the game worn Iron Man Jerseys to benefit our mission. Together we WILL strike out brain cancer!!!

We are pleased to let you know that we have a devoted committee focused on launching the StacheStrong Invitational in Jupiter, FL on Monday, May 8, 2023. Stay tuned for more details about our golf tournament and please reach out to us if you or anyone you know would be interested in being a sponsor for the inaugural event!
Every November, people around the globe grow out their facial hair to participate in the phenomenon known as Movember or No Shave November. StacheStrong invites you to participate with us during November by letting your mustache grow wild as we aim to further spread our mission to combat the deadliest brain cancer. Make GBM awareness the reason behind why you’re growing out your mustache, because we’ve learned first-hand how difficult it is for a lot of people to talk about brain cancer. Patients and their families feel isolated during what is seemingly an insurmountable uphill battle. Let’s start the conversation today, one ‘Stache at a time! If interested in participating and raising funds and awareness for our mission,
please create your account/unique fundraising page here!!!
We had plenty of opportunities to spread our mission to new audiences in 2022. If you’d like, give any of the following links a listen, watch or read! Additionally, please keep us in mind for any news segments, podcasts or the like as we aim to ensure more is done in the fight against brain cancer.

Hello  StacheStrong  Fam!
It’s been a bit since we got a newsletter out and there’s a lot to update everyone on. As I was reading through our past newsletters, it’s always amazing to see the continual growth. You may have heard it on a national interview, a local commercial or even one of several podcasts and news articles, but we are officially a $1,000,000 organization ($1,250,000+ to be exact!!!) I say it time and time again, but I remember when we raised our first $10,000 and the excitement that I shared with my brother for what we were doing. We knew this had the potential to be a leading organization in this space, we just didn’t realize it would happen in just over 3 years. This is only possible because of YOUR support and we’re humbled to be able to take such a difficult experience and turn it into hope for a better tomorrow. If you only have a brief moment, make sure to register for the upcoming 5K Run/Walk!!!

Research  Funded
We’ll update you on all the awesome events and happenings below, but what matters most is where this money is going and the good that it is doing in advancing brain cancer research. Since our last newsletter, we’ve funded several grants to highly rated and promising areas.

1) Northwestern: We funded $50,000 to provide 1 year of research by Dr. Brandyn Castro on developing a patient derived B-cell-based vaccine.

2) UMiami: We funded $50,000 to provide 1 year of research by Dr. Daniel Eichberg on investigating the role of CD97/ADGRE5 receptor in glioblastoma invasion and its mechanism of action in the brain.

3) UCSF: We funded $50,000 to provide 1 year of research by Dr. Jacob Young on in vivo gene screening and transcriptome editing with retroviral-delivered CRISPR-Cas for the treatment of glioblastoma.

4) Yale: We funded $100,000 towards a $1,000,000 gift from the National Brain Tumor Society to launch the targeting DNA damage response in glioma (TDG) consortium. This is a collaboration of world-class researchers advancing an emerging and promising, but underdeveloped, area of cancer research. TDG has the ability to propel an entirely new class of treatments forward for both adults and children with multiple types of malignant brain tumors.

5) Glioma Connectome Project (GCP): This is currently in progress, but we have sent out grant proposals to 11 top tier academic research centers (Henry Ford, Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson, Memorial Hermann, Mount Sinai NYC, Nebraska, Northwestern, Stanford, UCLA, UMiami and UPenn) to fund and launch the GCP.

These are tangible results to remind you why every dollar matters. It’s why your support is crucial. I can’t promise what tomorrow holds, but I can promise that StacheStrong will continue to push the envelope and fund cutting edge research in the hope of a world without brain cancer.

This disease affects 13,000 people annually and we feel humbled and blessed to be able to provide a platform for those who have gone through it. If you’ve ever watched a loved one go through this diagnosis, every day is ‘brain tumor awareness day’, but for those that haven’t, this is a raw and emotional look into the disease that ultimately claims 10,000 lives every year. Our social media channels were able to reach over 125,000 different people throughout #BTAM, which is exactly what we set out to do when we started StacheStrong. Thank you to all those who shared their story throughout the month.
4th  Annual  5K  Run/Walk
We are excited to host the 4th Annual StacheStrong 5K Run/Walk as a VIRTUAL AND IN PERSON (Vestal, NY) race during the weekend of September 18, 2021. Last year’s virtual race had 1,114 participants in all 50 states and we’re excited to continue to grow as we run/walk to raise awareness and funds for brain cancer research. You can complete the virtual run in your respective city and state at ANY TIME during that weekend and we will also hold the in person race in our hometown of Vestal, NY at the Vestal High School at 3:00pm on Saturday, September 18th. This is of extra significance for our family, because this is where GJ developed his love for running as a standout cross country and track runner for his beloved Golden Bears.
#BrewStacheStrong
Where to begin…the craft beer community has been nothing short of incredible throughout the #BrewStacheStrong campaign. We ended up partnering with 205 breweries in 37 states, which accounted for nearly 300,000 pints being brewed. Having this many breweries participate is humbling and beyond promising, especially given the everchanging protocols the last several months as they geared up for this collab. We’re expecting to raise over $250,000 and are grateful to everyone who was involved and partnered with our organization in making #BrewStacheStrong one of the largest beer collabs in the country!

We’re already gearing up for next year’s annual #BrewStacheStrong campaign so if you have a brewery in mind that wasn’t able to participate this year, let us know and we’ll include them on our save the date email. This has the ability to make a profound impact for years to come!
As we continue to grow, it’s moments like these that truly help us reach the next level of awareness. I was able to sit down with Meghan McCain for an interview to talk about GJ’s diagnosis, the birth of StacheStrong, reaching $1,000,000 raised as an organization, our unfortunate connection of losing a loved one to GBM and everything in between. We are so grateful to Meghan, ABC’s, The View, and all those who were instrumental in making this happen. Special thanks to Jamie, Rick, Molly K and Molly B for their time and dedication. Also a big thank you to David Wright and the New York Mets for a moment I’ll never forget; I’m sure Geej was smiling ear to ear and together we ARE making a difference!

We are excited to get back to some of our established events as restrictions are lifted. Our NYC fundraiser is our flagship and was the first ever event that launched StacheStrong in 2018. Our dedicated committee invites you to save the date for October 22nd from 7:00 – 11:00 pm. This year’s event will take place at Legends on W 33rd street (5 minute walk from Penn Station). As it currently stands, capacity will be 300 people so once tickets are sold out, they’re gone! We will update you as we learn more, but will adhere to any existing regulations. Additionally, if you, your company or someone you know would like to sponsor the NYC event or donate any items/experiences for raffle to raise additional funds, please let us know.

Whether you’re a new follower or have been here for some time, you’ve probably noticed the awesome daily content and posts highlighting all 205 participating #BrewStacheStrong breweries, as well as the revamped 5k and NYC Event flyers. We’ve been working hard behind the scenes with our 2 outstanding interns, as a part of an internship program with The University at Albany. Rachel and Zach stood out when applying for this internship, and they’ve continued to exceed expectations through their hard work, creative design and commitment to our purpose. The University created this unique and impactful opportunity by providing credits towards their education. They had such a wonderful semester experience that they have decided to stay involved as interns going forward to help with our content creation. We couldn’t do this without them and can’t thank them enough. It truly takes a village!
The TCS NYC Marathon is BACK this year on Sunday, November 7th. We have been accepted as a Community Sponsor and have been allocated 10 bibs for this year’s race, which will be the 50th Anniversary of the event. My Papa used to say “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” While I normally couldn’t agree more, last week was certainly a day I ‘cried because it was over’ when Ed let me know that his beloved Jess Morris had succumbed to GBM after a valiant 5+ year battle. You see, Jess was the FIRST person I ever met with GBM besides my brother. I remember taking a picture of her and GJ in September 2018 at the Biden Cancer Summit – both donning infectious smiles –  fully spread from ear to ear.

They were handed an incurable diagnosis and absolutely devoted themselves to flipping the script on this disease. Jess and I grew close over the past 3 years and joined arms in the fight against GBM. We’ve shared laughs, tears, a few glasses of red wine and plenty of speaking engagements and key notes together. She was invincible to me and I’ll forever value our friendship.

She founded Our Brain Bank, an interactive app that is focused on gathering data to improve knowledge and treatment options, all while fighting GBM. 10,000 people die every year from GBM and we’ll continue to push the envelope to change that, but losing Jess hit me hard. All the while, I had to remind myself of exactly what she would want. Get up, dust yourself off, and fight this beast. Fight this beast we will. Rest in peace, Jess.
Thank  You  to  our  Supporters!

Hello  StacheStrong  Fam!
Well, you all continue to amaze our family with your generosity and support; it’s amazing to see the continual growth of our organization as we aim to flip the script on this disease! In 2021 alone we were able to raise over $1,200,000 (1.2M!!!). Research  Funded
We’ll update you on all the awesome events and happenings below, but what matters most is where this money is going and the good that it is doing in advancing brain cancer research. We funded 10 grants in 2021 to highly rated and promising areas, including the following:

1) Glioma Connectome Project (GCP): We have officially kicked off this study, as reported by Yahoo News with 6 top tier academic research centers, including Henry Ford, Mount Sinai NYC, Nebraska, Northwestern, UMiami and UPenn. We are focused on increasing the participating institutions and this will serve 500+ patients in year 1!

2) Ivy Brain Tumor Center: We funded $340,000 as reported by the GlobeNewsWire to go towards the Ivy Center’s first-in-human Phase 0/1 clinical trial of sonodynamic therapy (SDT) for patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme and recurrent high-grade gliomas. The published results found that SDT rapidly leads to targeted oxidative stress and cell death in human glioblastoma tissue. SDT was well-tolerated in all patients. This novel drug-device combination has the potential to become a new treatment modality for patients with brain cancer.

3) Duke: We funded $150,000 to to assess how individual cells evolve and adapt over time and in response to therapy. As gliomas are highly plastic with an invariable tendency to recur, understanding the disease on a single cell level will offer insight into cell behavior and mechanisms of resistance. Gene expression profiling at this level will aid in the identification of particular therapeutic sensitivities that may be present and otherwise unseen based on traditional sequencing methods. As a result, this work takes into account the changing cellular landscape of gliomas and has the potential to inform future therapeutics to prevent recurrence.

5) UMiami: We funded $50,000 to provide 1 year of research by Dr. Daniel Eichberg on investigating the role of CD97/ADGRE5 receptor in glioblastoma invasion and its mechanism of action in the brain.

6) UCSF: We funded $50,000 to provide 1 year of research by Dr. Jacob Young on in vivo gene screening and transcriptome editing with retroviral-delivered CRISPR-Cas for the treatment of glioblastoma.

These are tangible results to remind you why every dollar matters. It’s why your support is crucial. We can’t promise what tomorrow holds, but we can promise that StacheStrong will continue to push the envelope and fund cutting edge research in the hope of a world without brain cancer.
4th  Annual  5K  Run/Walk
Our 4th Annual StacheStrong 5K Run/Walk had over 1,500 supporters in all 50 states and it was a truly special day. We raised over $140,000 and our committee is already hard at work to make our 5th Annual the best yet.

We ask you to SAVE THE DATE for the weekend of September 17, 2022. Our in person race will return to the Vestal High School on Saturday, September 17th, 2022 at 3:00pm and will take place virtually in your respective city any time that weekend.  This is of extra significance for our family as it will be our race’s 5th anniversary (#Forever5) and 3 years to the date since Geej gained his wings.

We ended up partnering with 205 breweries in 37 states, which accounted for nearly 300,000 pints being brewed in 2021. Having this many breweries participate is humbling and beyond promising. We’ve already started our outreach for 2022’s #BrewStacheStrong campaign so if you have a contact or friend in the beer/brewery world, please connect us via email. This campaign has the ability to make a profound impact for years to come!
Together we raised over $70,000 and had a wonderful night sharing stories, laughs and new friendships.  Special thanks to our Sponsors: Novocure, EY, Black Diamond Therapeutics, Undertone, Regeneron, Immunomic Therapeutics, Hermes Helpers, National Brain Tumor Society, McNeil & Company and Armistead Mechanical Inc!!!

SAVE THE DATE for our 4th Annual NYC Fundraiser on Friday, October 21st, 2022. Same time. Same place. Think of friends and contacts you have who can help support through sponsorships, donated baskets and event registrations. See you then and thanks again!!!
Whether you’re a new follower or have been here for some time, you’ve probably noticed the awesome new content throughout the year highlighting all 205 participating #BrewStacheStrong breweries, as well as the revamped 5k and NYC Event flyers. They had such a wonderful experience and we’re excited to see what’s next for them as they graduate this coming Spring. We couldn’t do this without them and can’t thank them enough. It truly takes a village!
Where to begin?! The StacheStrong Marathon team was simply one of a kind. Our 17 runners came together and raised over $130,000 for brain cancer research and created a new community of engaged supporters along the way. They inspired so many across the country and left a lasting impact during each stride of their 26.2 miles. There’s no two ways about it – GBM sucks – but the family and togetherness we have created with thousands of people have us in awe. It’s incredible to think that I ran the Marathon in 2018 as a platform to start StacheStrong and now here we are with a legit team of 17 runners in 2021 blazing their own trail. It’s truly the StacheStrong difference!! Thank you to each of our team members and welcome to the family!!!

If interested in applying to be on our 2022 NYC Marathon team, please email us at StacheStrong@gmail.com to be considered.
The #LiveLikeGJ Initiative has launched!!!

This initiative will honor his legacy by providing a game day experience to his favorite teams and giving the gift of “GJ smiles” to a family going through GBM treatments. Enter the Marten family. They represent EVERYTHING StacheStrong stands for. Togetherness, grit, unwavering support for one another and ear to ear smiles. We’re truly blessed to continue to meet amazing families like the Martens and proud to provide an evening at the ballpark!!!

A MAJOR thank you and appreciation to the Mets organization for making this day truly memorable. They gave the Marten family everything and more than we envisioned when we started to plan this initiative. Excited to partner with this organization annually to help families #LiveLikeGJ!

We are pleased to let you know that we have a devoted committee focused on launching the StacheStrong Invitational in Florida for a target date of May 2023! Stay tuned for more details about our golf tournament and please reach out to us if you or anyone you know would be interested in being a sponsor for the inaugural event!
Our growers raised over $35,000 throughout the month of November. They made GBM awareness the reason behind growing out their mustache and made a major impact. We’ve learned first-hand how difficult it is for a lot of people to talk about brain cancer and this is a big help. A special thanks to Jeremy Isenberg and the Chex Finer Foods team for leading the way!
We had plenty of opportunities to spread our mission to new audiences in 2021. If you’d like, give any of the following links a listen, watch or read! We truly can’t thank everyone enough for their support and generosity over the past 3+ years.  Raising over $1,200,000 in 2021 alone for brain cancer research is truly amazing and we can’t put into words the profound impact that each of you have had in our fight against GBM.  It means the world to us, but more importantly, to all those hoping for a cure. Your Donations and Support Made a MAJOR Impact in 2020
2020 was an interesting year, to say the least; however, our supporters made sure to continue to make a difference and support the advancement of brain cancer research.  We had a majority of our events cancelled this year, but still managed to raise nearly $200,000 during a pandemic.  That’s the power of each and every one of you across all 50 states and several countries.  We funded 3 separate clinical trials/research grants this year and with your help, will continue to push the envelope in 2021 and flip the script on GBM!  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and from all those facing this dire disease.  Here’s to a brighter, safer and healthier 2021!!!
An Added Tax Benefit for 2020 Donations
This spring, the CARES ACT was passed into law and allows a “partial above the line deduction” for your donations.  In the past, the only way to deduct charitable giving was by itemizing your deducations.  In 2020, even if you take the standard deduction on your tax return, you can still claim a deduction of up to $300 in donations made by cash, check or credit card!  Charitable donations can reduce your taxable income and there’s still 2 days to take advantage of these new benefits by donating before the year ends if you haven’t reached $300 in 2020.
Happy New Year!!!

THANK YOU!

WOW.  It’s not often that I’m left speechless, but the 3rd Annual 5K Run/Walk did just that.  Watching 1,114 people within ALL 50 states participate and post on social media, while proudly wearing their neon orange StacheStrong shirts, was a sight to behold.  So many families and communities came together for their loved ones and those affected by GBM.

We had over 100 people run #ForJari in several states.  #TeamMarty was active with large followings in Florida, Ohio and Texas.  The #LexiStrong brigade was out in full force together in Pennsylvania.  #TeamTB had 3 generations of participants in North Carolina.  #TeamRog made a morning out of the event with brunch and a walk together.  #TeamRick had plenty of New York covered.  We even had a family and a running group in Alaska run #ForJohn.  So many of you showed up and represented your loved ones, while also raising a tremendous amount of awareness for StacheStrong and brain cancer research.

THIS is why we built StacheStrong – to serve as a beacon of hope and provide a sense of community to all those fighting their battle.

As we watched the outpouring of support on social media, I couldn’t help but picture Geej and his infamous smile, knowing that so many people had rallied around our mission.   We can’t thank each of you enough!!!

YOUR IMPACT – OVER $50,000 RAISED!

Because each of you took the time to register, participate and post on social media, we were able to raise net funds of over $50,000.  What does this mean?  We are going to be able to fully fund a clinical trial and already have our Medical Advisory Board reviewing a highly graded grant proposal for Glioblastoma research.  This is a major deal and something each of you can be proud of.  All of your posts, shares, and miles logged are going to make an immediate impact and difference in the advancement of brain cancer research!

WHAT’S NEXT?!
Your support for the 3rd Annual 5K has made a major impact on our ability to continually fund cutting edge research.  We hope your commitment and relationship with StacheStrong continues!  You can support further by visiting our online store, where we have pocket tees, crewnecks, athletic performance shirts (same material as the 5K shirt), as well as hats and many more items.  Comfy and affordable clothing that also benefits brain cancer research? Checkmate!
MOVEMBER – JOIN US!

Every November, people around the globe grow out their facial hair to participate in the phenomenon known as Movember or No Shave November.  We invite you to  #LiveStacheStrong with us during November and let your mustache grow wild throughout the month as we aim to further spread our mission to combat the deadliest brain cancer.  Make GBM awareness the reason behind why you’re growing out your mustache, because we’ve learned first-hand how difficult it is for a lot of people to talk about brain cancer.  Patients and their families feel isolated during what is seemingly an insurmountable uphill battle.  Let’s start the conversation today, one ‘Stache at a time!!!

We had a tremendous amount of support last year from different police and fire departments , as well as several individuals from around the United States.  If you or someone you know is interested, please email us and we will set up a donation page for your group on our website.  We mustache you to tag @StacheStrong and use #GrowStacheStrong and #LiveStacheStrong in all social media posts.

Run solo, but not alone. Always run with ROAD iD, the one accessory no runner should be without.  You can customize this simple and stylish ID with the information most important to you, from emergency contact numbers to vital medical info.

Click here to score a Limited Edition StacheStrong ROAD iD.  ROAD iD is donating $10 from each purchase to StacheStrong – pairing peace of mind with purpose!

WE ARE EXCITED TO HAVE YOU ON TEAM STACHESTRONG AND LOOK FORWARD TO FUTURE EVENTS AND PARTNERSHIPS IN AN EFFORT TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS FOR BRAIN CANCER RESEARCH!!!

Hello  StacheStrong  Fam!

I remember it like it was yesterday, yet at times it feels like forever ago.  I came to GJ with an idea to take StacheStrong beyond a catch phrase within our inner circle by formally starting a nonprofit charity.  I shared the website I had been therapeutically building and asked my brother if he wanted to go forward with this or just focus on his fight.  Without hesitation, he emphatically said, let’s do it!  From that day forward, we set out together on a mission to help others and ultimately raise funds and awareness for brain cancer research.  Knowing what I know now about GBM, it’s even more amazing how devoted he was to helping others after being diagnosed with a terminal illness.  Becoming an inspiration for so many, his selflessness was best captured during an interview with a local news channel when he stated, “I’m interested in helping people less fortunate than me.”  On the 2nd anniversary of StacheStrong, we’re committed as ever to continuing GJ’s mission of helping others.

I vividly remember how excited GJ was when we raised our first $10,000.  I also remember the huge smile on his face when I told him we had eclipsed $100,000.  I miss that smile and boy do I wish I could get the chance to see his face to tell him, we surpassed $250,000 a day before our organization’s second anniversary.  It’s incredibly exciting to say that our first quarter million for research was raised in two years, all stemming from his determination to #LiveStacheStrong combined with the overwhelming generosity of our donors.  I know he’s watching over and guiding us all as we continue to make an impact and flip the script on GBM.

A lot has happened to date, but more work lies ahead to ensure people like GJ have a chance for a cure.  Thank you to each and every one of you for being along for the journey so far, but buckle up because it’s time to take this to the next level!

Online  Store

For nearly 2 years, the Gerner household has been a mini workshop, preparing orders, organizing thousands of shirts and ensuring each one gets to our supporters.  It’s been incredibly rewarding watching the impact first hand as the shirt orders continually poured in. As you have seen, our classic black StacheStrong shirts have been worn proudly across the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America (we’re still waiting on someone to visit Antarctica!!!).

Because of YOUR support, we’ve grown to a point where we now need a 3rd party provider and we’re excited to announce the launch of our online store, which will be fully handled by Worldwide Sport Supply.

One thing that has always been important to us in everything we do is QUALITY. Our team has spent the past few months vetting thousands of items from several catalogues. We have touched and tried on every item in our store, ensuring that only top notch gear is sold!

How’s this going to work for our supporters? On the last Monday of every month, the store will compile all orders, print our logo and mail out. You can expect your order to arrive 2-3 weeks after month end. Please shop online to see all of our StacheStrong gear, which includes shirts, sweatshirts, polos, tank tops, hats and much much more!

Meet  Our  CFO

Medical  Advisory  Board

With the guidance of our esteemed board member, Doctor Hadjipanayis, StacheStrong now has a Medical Advisory Board to review grants and distribute funds to cutting edge areas of research.  Our Medical Advisory Board features 5 different clinicians and researchers with a brain tumor focus at Columbia University, Mount Sinai and NYU Langone.  We are excited to take this next step with the help of the below individuals, who will be responsible for scoring applications based on scientific merit.

Live  Like  GJ  Initiative

While StacheStrong’s mission is still to raise money for brain cancer research, we know the importance of celebrating life.  Research allowed GJ to live 25 months after his diagnosis, doubling the statistics for his longevity.  During that time, we were fortunate enough to have countless days enjoying life during his fight, and StacheStrong will be honoring his legacy by providing a game day experience to his favorite teams.  As we originally mentioned in GJ’s obituary, we’re excited to launch the ‘Live Like GJ Initiative’ and give the gift of “GJ smiles” to a family going through GBM treatments.

Our family enjoyed trips, sporting events, concerts and memorable times together and NONE of this would have been possible without his zest for life and positivity.  We also were fortunate enough to have a strong family unit that made it a priority to enjoy every waking second together.  During the 25 months he battled GBM, we were able to experience more together than most do in a lifetime.

GJ adored the NY Mets, NY Jets and UNC Tar Heels so we will ensure another family battling GBM can be selected to receive tickets to watch one of GJs favorite teams. If you would like to nominate yourself or a family going through GBM, please nominate here

Hello  StacheStrong  Fam!

It’s been 5 months since our last newsletter and an indescribable amount of change and grief has occurred in that time.  After a 25 month battle with GBM, our inspiration, GJ, passed the torch to us to continue the fight against GBM.  He gained his wings on September 17th, 2019 and while it’s been a daily battle for all of us, we must continue to #LiveStacheStrong together as we raise funds and awareness for brain cancer research.  You all have done just that as our organization has raised more than $210,000 since incorporation.  Together we ARE making a difference as we flip the script on GBM.

Live  Like  GJ  Initiative

As we mentioned in GJ’s obituary, we’re excited to launch the Live Like GJ Initiative and give the gift of “GJ smiles” to a family going through GBM treatments.  We were fortunate enough to have countless days enjoying life during GJ’s fight and StacheStrong will be honoring his legacy by providing a game day experience to his favorite teams, inclusive of tickets.  He adored the NY Mets, NY Jets and UNC Tar Heels so we will ensure another family battling GBM can also enjoy these same adventures.  Stay tuned for our official campaign launch during 2020.  For corporate sponsorships – please contact us!
New  Website  Design

www.StacheStrong.org was originally built as a therapeutic release that ultimately became a 501(c)3 organization.  Two years later, we have an entirely new platform and design, thanks to our friends at Pinckney Hugo Group.  We can’t thank their team enough for their dedication to our mission and donating their time.  The new website has enhanced capabilities and we’re ecstatic to see where it will take our mission!
Meet  Our  Newest  Board  Member

We met Josh Perry at the Biden Cancer Summit last September and GJ always admired his energy and passion.  After a third brain tumor diagnosis, Josh left the comfort of a professional BMX career to harness the power of his incredible story and inspire others to foster new perspectives and take action in their lives.  Josh illustrates how challenges come in different shapes and sizes, yet for every problem there’s always a solution. He emphasizes that happy and successful people use the same mental tools to get them there, regardless of their past or current tribulations.  He will be a tremendous addition to our organization and truly embodies our mantra  – #LiveStacheStrong

2nd  Annual  StacheStrong  5K  Run/Walk

Our annual 5K run/walk was a tremendous success with 353 virtual and in person registered runners.  Together we raised over $10,000 as the community ran in GJ’s honor.  Save the date for our 3rd Annual StacheStrong 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 19, 2020.  Special thanks to our sponsors and supporters for making this year so impactful.
NYC  Fundraiser

Our annual main fundraiser was our biggest yet thanks to all of our supporters.  We had 220 people attend, 51 donated baskets and together we raised over $22,000.  A special thanks to our friends and supporters at McHale’s Pub, as well as our Event Sponsor – Novocure and Gold Sponsor – National Brain Tumor Society.
2019  NYC  Marathon

The NYC Marathon was on 11/3 and our team was absolutely tremendous.  They braved the 26.2 mile course and made us all feel GJ’s presence amongst the cheering crowds.  Together, our team raised $20,975 and finished strong…StacheStrong!
– Application for our 2020 NYC Marathon team will be sent out in January –

Corporate Volleyball Tournament

The employees at Alliant Credit Union in Illinois honored StacheStrong in their 14th Annual Charity Volleyball tournament.  They raised $8,840, which was matched by the Alliant Foundation for a total donation of $17,680.  Special thanks to all those involved in making this happen at Alliant.  If you’re interested in doing something similar at your company, contact us!
#GrowStacheStrong

We have several police forces and individuals growing out their mustaches this November in support of our mission.  Let us know if you’d like to be part of the team!  November is the best excuse to #GrowStacheStrong and we’d be honored if you’d grow your mustache and promote our mission.  Anytime anyone asks why you’re growing out that gnarly ‘Stache, educate them about StacheStrong and GBM!

Dr. Hormigo’s Research Funded With $100,000 Grant!

As our mission states, we are dedicated to flipping the script on GBM and finding a cure.  We won’t rest until this occurs and we have donated $100,000 in partnership with the National Brain Tumor Society to launch Dr. Adilia Hormigo’s research project.  Dr. Hormigo was GJ’s Neuro-Oncologist (pictured below) and is dedicated to researching and combating brain cancer in a patient centric model.  We are funding a fully personalized immunotherapy approach to GBM and believe this has great promise.  She is one of the best in the world and while you know GJ always believed he would be the first to beat GBM, she truly did, as well.  We’re honored to gift this grant to launch her latest research at Mount Sinai in NYC.
We also wanted to provide an update on the research we funded earlier this year, where we partnered with NBTS to gift $500,000 to launch GBM AGILE. This revolutionary new way of testing and developing brain cancer treatments is the largest collaboration in the history of brain cancer research and has already resulted in enrolling patients in this trial at 7 major health institutions across the U.S.  That’s how you #LiveStacheStrong!!!
